Among cliffs and legends, discover the wild magic of Roccapina and its surroundings, one of the best-hidden treasures of the Figari coast in southern Corsica.

The charm of Corsica: beaches for all tastes

The mountainous island of Corsica, in the midst of the Mediterranean, is a true paradise for people looking for dreamlike beaches. With over a thousand kilometres of coastline, the island offers a diversity of landscapes to captivate every visitor. People who yearn for the wild can lose themselves on the vast virgin beaches of the Agriates desert. Those who prefer comfort can find well-appointed sandy beaches at Saint-Florent, perfect for families and travellers looking for facilities at their fingertips. The hidden corners of Cap Corse surprise curious travellers with small secluded coves, while people who dream of picture-postcard turquoise waters and white sands find their ideal spots on the heavenly beaches of Bonifacio.

This latter region, in southern Corsica, is precisely where you can find a timeless natural treasure: Roccapina beach.

Roccapina: where nature sculpts legends

Roccapina beach is much more than just a sandy spot. Lying between Bonifacio and Sartène, a short distance from Figari airport, this haven is a natural spectacle combining sea, mountain and history.

When you get there, you will find a sheltered bay, of fine white sand, bathed by a hypnotic blue sea. What really distinguishes Roccapina, though, is its surroundings. On a rocky promontory stands the famous “Lion of Roccapina”, a granite block patiently sculpted by wind and rain over millennia into the silhouette of a lion that seems to guard the coastline. This stone sentinel, steeped in legend, lends the landscape an almost magical quality, accompanied by the presence of a Genoese tower harking back to times of pirates and lookouts.

The beach is difficult to reach – lying at the end of a dirt track that calls for some dexterity at the wheel – while it retains its wild beauty. The reward is a serene, uncrowded environment, ideal for people looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in a genuinely Corsican landscape.

Things to do at and around Roccapina

Although the greatest attraction of Roccapina is undoubtedly its beach and spectacular views, the area offers restless travellers many more marvellous options:

  • Hiking to the lion and the tower: a path leads from the car park, ascending to the granite lion and the ancient Genoese tower. The views from above are simply unforgettable, with the sea stretching to the horizon and the coast cut into hidden cliffs and coves.

  • Visiting A Casa di Roccapina: just a few kilometres away, this interpretation centre is a must for learning more about the region’s history, geology and legends. Contained in an old manor house, the museum combines interactive and audiovisual exhibitions to delight young and old. You get magnificent views of the coast from its terrace too.
  • Exploring other nearby beaches: while Roccapina is unique, its surrounding beaches are not far behind. Beaches such as Erbaju and Murtoli offer equally spectacular landscapes and the chance to spend a full day discovering new hidden coves and corners.
  • Charming villages: nearby Sartène, with its cobbled alleys and medieval atmosphere, is perfect for a gentle walk and a break on a terrace to try a good Corsican wine accompanied by local products. Bonifacio, with its citadel hanging over the cliffs, is another must-see.

Practical tips for enjoying Roccapina

Visiting Roccapina requires some planning to make the experience perfect:

  • Access: the road leading to the beach is a rather bumpy dirt track of around 4 kilometres. A car with good clearance is recommended. If you prefer, leave your car at the beginning of the track and walk down (about 45 minutes on foot).
  • Facilities: the beach has no services; there are no beach bars, showers or lifeguards. That means you need to bring water, food, umbrella and sun protection. There is virtually no natural shade.
  • Best time to visit: choose the early hours of the day or the late afternoon, when the sun is less intense and the light enhances the colours of the landscape. That means you also avoid the busiest times in high season.
  • Respect the environment: Roccapina is a protected natural area. Collect up all your waste and leave no trace of your visit. This is essential to preserve the beauty and purity of this corner of Corsica.

The beach at Roccapina is one of those places etched into travellers’ memories. Its white sand, deep blue waters and the imposing figure of the lion watching over it from above paint an unforgettable picture. As a destination it combines adventure, nature and culture; perfect for those seeking an authentic experience in the heart of the Mediterranean, rather than just sun and sea.

Hidden away in southern Corsica, Figari is a place where time seems to stand still and nature retains its untamed essence. This charming village, nestled amongst vineyards and mountains, exudes Corsican authenticity and a tranquillity that inspires contemplation. Here, the breeze carries the scents of the maquis and sea salt, while the Mediterranean light bathes the hills, cliffs and pristine beaches.

The nearby coastline is home to hidden gems such as Figari Bay and Pianottoli-Caldarello beach. Here, the turquoise water contrasts beautifully with the red rocks and green pines. The region’s constant wind makes it ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing in its crystal-clear waters. The area is also ideal for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle thanks to its secluded coves and coastal paths seemingly designed for silence.

Not far away, the legendary city of Bonifacio rises up on white limestone cliffs, while the town of Porto-Vecchio blends history with a chic atmosphere and the stunning beaches of Palombaggia and Santa Giulia. However, Figari retains his own, more intimate and rugged soul, which is deeply connected to the land and its traditions.

The local wineries produce wines that reflect the landscape: intense, sunny and authentic. The quieter, inland villages such as Sotta and Monacia-d’Aullène reveal another side to Corsica, where stone houses and centuries-old olive trees depict a peaceful and proud way of life, evoked by Corsican songs.

Figari does not draw hordes of tourists. It’s a place for those seeking the essentials: travellers who prefer the road less travelled and unspoilt beauty, and who want to discover an island where many corners remain untamed.
