Three urban beaches in Ajaccio accessible by foot or bus

In Ajaccio, the sea is always close. Here are three beaches accessible by foot or bus that combine crystal-clear waters, comfort and that Mediterranean rhythm that invites visitors to linger.

In Ajaccio, the sea is part of everyday life and appears almost without looking for it. The capital of Corsica and birthplace of Napoleon, Ajaccio combines history, Mediterranean light and an immediate connection to the water.

Ajaccio is also a strategic base for exploring some of Corsica’s most spectacular beaches: from the wild coves towards the Îles Sanguinaires to the more open landscapes of the west coast. It’s the perfect starting point to discover an island famous for its almost surreal clear water and striking colour contrasts.

But not every trip calls for driving, planning excursions or venturing far from the city. On a short getaway, or when travelling with family, what visitors often want is the opposite: easy access, proximity and the ability to combine beach and city life effortlessly.

That’s where Ajaccio’s urban beaches come in. Accessible, pleasant and surprisingly authentic spaces where the sea retains all its beauty—clear waters, gentle seabeds, intense light—without complications.

Plage Saint-François: a swim with a view of the harbour

Just a few steps from the historic centre, Plage Saint-François is the most immediate expression of Ajaccio’s proximity to the sea.

It’s a small beach of fine sand mixed with some pebbly sections, located next to the harbour and naturally protected by the bay. The water here is usually very calm, with barely any waves, making it perfect for a quick and relaxing swim. Its crystal clear water means the seabed can be seen easily, especially on sunny days.

The entry into the water is gradual and gentle, ideal for those who want to swim without effort or simply cool off near the shore.

Facilities:

  • Showers nearby (along the promenade)
  • Direct access from the city
  • Restaurants and cafés just a few metres away

Reasons to visit:

  • Perfect for an impromptu dip
  • One of the few beaches where visitors can swim with views of the old town

Tip:

At sunset, the atmosphere changes completely: fewer people, golden light and an almost cinematic feeling facing the harbour.

Plage du Trottel: the locals’ beach

A 10–15-minute walk from the centre, Plage du Trottel is where Ajaccio feels most lived-in. Wider than Plage Saint-François, it combines sand and small pebbles, with particularly clear and clean water. The sea is usually calm, protected by the shape of the bay, making it very pleasant for swimming. It’s common to see swimmers doing laps parallel to the shore or simply floating in the sun.

The entry into the water is gentle, although in some areas there may be small stones, so water shoes are recommended for young children.

Facilities:

  • Showers
  • Seafront promenade with bars and restaurants
  • Natural shade in some areas

Reasons to visit:

  • Authentic atmosphere, far from a touristy feel
  • Ideal for spending several relaxed hours

Plage de Marinella: sand, space and crystal-clear water

Slightly further away but still very easy to reach, Plage de Marinella is Ajaccio’s most comfortable and family-friendly option.

Here the beach is inviting: fine sand, more space, and exceptionally clear water with shades ranging from light blue to turquoise. The sea is usually very calm, with hardly any waves on most days.

The entry into the water is very gradual, making it one of the best options for children and those who prefer a relaxed swim.

Facilities:

  • Nearby restaurants and beach bars
  • Sunbed rental during the season
  • Easy access from the road

How to get there:

  • Urban bus along the Route des Sanguinaires (15–20 minutes from the centre)

Reasons to visit:

  • Ideal for spending the whole day
  • A “holiday beach” feeling without leaving the city

Tip:

Stay until the end of the day—the sunset light over the gulf is especially soft and atmospheric.

Tips for enjoying Ajaccio without a car

Getting around these beaches is easy and part of the experience:

  • On foot: Trottel is perfectly connected to the centre
  • By bus: the Route des Sanguinaires line has frequent buses to Marinella
  • When to visit:
    • Morning: Trottel
    • Afternoon: Marinella
    • Sunset: Saint-François

A perfect day between city and sea

In Ajaccio, the perfect plan doesn’t need to be complicated:

  • Breakfast in the historic centre
  • Walk to Saint-François
  • Continue to Trottel for a swim
  • Bus to Marinella for the afternoon
  • Return to the centre at sunset

Ajaccio doesn’t overwhelm visitors with long distances or inaccessible beaches. Its charm lies in the opposite: proximity, simplicity and the feeling that everything is within reach.

Here, the sea is not a destination to get to, but a constant presence that accompanies the journey. And on a short get away, that changes everything.
