Where to enjoy an aperitif in Catania: a guide to the best places in the city

Catania, a vibrant, colourful city at the foot of Mount Etna, is a definite must for foodies. With its chaotic markets, ancient culinary traditions and modern restaurants, this Sicilian city is heaven for anyone who’s a lover of good food and drink.

Who knows whether Antonio Benedetto Carpano, the Turin distiller who invented vermouth in the late 1700s, ever imagined that his drink, served before meals to “whet the appetite” (hence the term aperitivo, from the Latin aperire, meaning to open), would have created such a beloved ritual as the aperitif!

Symbolising conviviality and relaxation, and the perfect time for celebrating the day with friends and family, the aperitif in Catania is, as in the rest of Italy, a sacred and well-loved tradition. Between the hours of 6pm and 9pm, the bars come alive with conversation, clinking glasses and plates laden with appetisers. Whether you just fancy chilling out after a day spent exploring the city or you want to get a taste of Catania’s nightlife, the aperitif is the perfect way to start off your evening. It’s also a good time to try some of the typical local specialities, such as arancini, panelle (chickpea fritters), caponata, a mixed plate of small fried fish, marinated olives and local cheeses and cold meats, accompanied by volcanic wines, spritzes or cocktails with a touch of tradition. You may not have much room left for dinner, but that’s a risk you’ll be happy to take!

If you’re looking for the best venues, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s a selection of places to go for a memorable aperitif.

The best neighbourhoods for an aperitif in Catania

Let’s start by finding out where to go when the sun starts to go down and your stomach starts to rumble; the old town is a part of Catania that they say never sleeps, and it’s full of Happy Hour venues, from traditional osterias to more stylish haunts, ranging from wine bars to beer bars and kiosk bars. The centre is quite compact, so everywhere is easily walkable, but you’ll find, particularly in summer, that the area around the port and the seafront is also bursting with life when it’s time for an aperitif.

Via Etnea

Catania’s main street, with its elegant buildings and a view of Mount Etna, has numerous bars and cafés for enjoying an aperitif in style.

Piazza Vincenzo Bellini

At the heart of the city’s nightlife, this square houses the Massimo Bellini Theatre and is surrounded by bars ideal for an aperitif with a good atmosphere.

Piazza Federico di Svevia

Near the Castello Ursino castle, this area is a mix of historical charm and modernity, with numerous fashionable bars.
