Here, culture is not just for museums; it’s for the streets, former industrial sites, reinvented venues, and events that bring residents and visitors together through shared curiosity.
Since its role as the European Capital of Culture in 2004, Lille has made contemporary creation one of its main driving forces. It was in this spirit that lille3000 was born: a key cultural project that builds on this momentum by offering major themed seasons, exhibitions, urban celebrations and events that are open to everyone. Having explored India, Eastern Europe, fantasy, the Renaissance, El Dorado, utopia and celebration, Lille3000 will continue its journey in 2026 with a new destination: the Mediterranean.
From 15 May to 27 September 2026, Gare Saint Sauveur will therefore become Gare Méditerranée, as part of Saison Méditerranée 2026, an initiative led by the Institut français. This vibrant, open cultural event is an invitation to explore the richness and diversity of the Mediterranean countries and their contemporary issues.
Gare Saint Sauveur, a vibrant venue in the heart of Lille
Formerly a freight station, Gare Saint Sauveur was rehabilitated by the City of Lille and is now one of the city’s most engaging cultural venues. Opened in 2009 for Europe XXL, the second major edition of lille3000, it has become a multidisciplinary space where exhibitions, concerts, cinema screenings, shows, workshops, talks, performances, family activities and gourmet breaks come together.
The charm of “St So”, as the locals of Lille call it, lies in its creative and relaxed atmosphere. People come to see an exhibition, but also to have a drink, attend a concert, take part in a workshop or discover an unexpected artistic offering. They also come to enjoy the esplanade when the city comes alive in fine weather.
In 2026, this convivial atmosphere comes alive with the colours of the Mediterranean. Gare Saint Sauveur transforms into a meeting place for cultures, stories, disciplines and generations. The programme, devised by lille3000 in collaboration with regional associations, companies and cultural operators, encourages dialogue between the local scene and artists and imaginations from both shores.
Gare Méditerranée: a season for travelling without leaving Lille
The Mediterranean is simultaneously a sea, a border, a passageway, a space of memory, and a territory of creation. It connects as much as it separates, uniting languages, histories, cuisines, music, beliefs, gestures and stories, some intimate and some collective.
The Gare Méditerranée season seeks to highlight this rich complexity. The aim is to introduce the widest possible audience to the richness of Mediterranean cultures, and the contemporary issues facing this region. Themes such as plural identities, migration, memory, transmission, spiritualities, shared narratives, youth and diasporas resonate particularly strongly in Lille, a city long shaped by exchange, movement and cultural blending.
Throughout the season, Gare Saint Sauveur hosts a variety of projects spanning many disciplines: music, dance, theatre, circus, literature, cinema, poetry, gastronomy, workshops and performances. Free events are held every weekend, in a family-friendly and festive atmosphere that remains true to Gare Saint Sauveur’s DNA.
Traversées, a collective exhibition between the two shores
At the heart of this season is the collective exhibition Traversées, supported by Volotea and occupying Halle B at Gare Saint Sauveur. Presented from 15 May to 27 September 2026, it brings together monumental works and immersive installations created by pairs of artists.
The principle is as simple as it is powerful: bringing together Moroccan, Tunisian and Algerian artists with French artists from those countries’ diasporas. Together, working four-handed, they create works that challenge the concepts of identity, memory, territory and migration.
Curated by architect and independent curator Olfa Feki, Traversées offers a sensitive mapping of shifting Maghrebi identities. Here, exile is not only understood as geographical displacement. It can also be internal, existential and intimate. It can be caused by a mismatch with the surrounding codes, a fragmented heritage, a social gaze, a transforming memory or an identity seeking to be redefined.
The exhibition invites visitors to explore both spaces and stories. It speaks of departures and returns, displaced bodies, transmitted memories, collective wounds, inherited gestures and dreamed-of or lost territories. It reveals what is often invisible: subtle traces, silent presences and enduring connections.
Immersive works to feel the act of crossing
The strength of Traversées lies in the diversity of the forms it brings together. Photography, sound, textiles, video, sculpture, drawing, installation art, archival material, light, ceramics and immersive technology come together to create a route in which each pair of artists offers a different approach to the concept of transition.
Bruno Boudjelal and Lola Khalfa, for instance, explore how collective trauma circulates between generations and across the shores of the Mediterranean. Héla Ammar and Shourouk Rhaiem examine the relationship between light, erasure and visibility within migratory journeys. Wiame Haddad and Sara Kaddouri use a combination of film and soundscapes to explore themes of possession, power, and the collapse of dominant narratives. Mehdi Klibi and Sana Chamakh explore exile through the body as the primary territory of presence, absence and disappearance.
Other works offer more contemplative or symbolic experiences, such as an installation inspired by the zaouia as a place of contemplation; a path combining photography, video, and natural materials; sculptures made from reused fragments; and a portal evoking the bride’s departure as the first female exile.
The exhibition does not seek to reduce the Mediterranean to a single image. Instead, it reveals its contradictions, movements, fractures and beauty. It encourages visitors to embrace change, to listen and observe differently, and to perhaps recognise elements of their own story in these narratives.
