Asturias in Festival Mode: A Cultural Spring and a Preview of Summer

In Asturias, spring is more than just a transitional season; it’s a time when cultural life reawakens with a unique vitality, though still lacking the intensity of summer.

As the days grow longer, towns regain their festive rhythm, and cities host events that blend tradition and modernity. This is probably the best time to discover an Asturias that lives culture from within—without rush or crowds.

From May to June, the calendar brims with events that make it easy to plan a bespoke getaway, ranging from electronic art festivals in Gijón to agricultural fairs in Oviedo, and popular celebrations in small villages. A journey that also serves as a prelude to the major events of the Asturian summer.

May kicks off with electronic beats and tradition

L.E.V. Festival (30 April – 3 May, Gijón)

The L.E.V. Festival opens the season with a proposal that stands out for its contemporary approach. This internationally renowned festival of digital art and electronic music transforms spaces across the city into immersive environments where images, sounds and technology interact.

Activities take place in theatres, cultural centres and open-air venues, featuring audiovisual installations, concerts and performances. Tickets should be booked in advance, particularly for evening shows, and visitors are encouraged to combine their visit with a walk along Gijón’s seafront.

Feria de la Ascensión (mid-May, Oviedo)

Just a few weeks later, the atmosphere changes completely as the Feria de la Ascensión takes place, one of the most traditional events in the Asturian calendar.

For several days, Oviedo is filled with markets, livestock exhibitions, folk music and stalls selling local produce. This is the perfect opportunity to experience Asturian rural culture in the heart of the city. It is recommended to arrive early to avoid peak hours and explore the historic centre.

Rice Pudding Festival (second Sunday of May, Santa Eulalia de Cabranes)

More intimate, but equally authentic, is the gastronomic celebration dedicated to one of the region’s most iconic desserts in Santa Eulalia de Cabranes.

The Rice Pudding Festival brings locals and visitors together for tastings, competitions, and traditional music. The best way to enjoy it is to embrace the local atmosphere, sample different versions of the dessert, and explore the surrounding countryside, where spring is at its greenest.

June: traditions take to the streets

Boroña Festival (early June, Torazo)

In the small village of Torazo, the Boroña Festival celebrates an ancestral recipe made with corn and other traditional ingredients.

Its preparation is a communal activity, accompanied by music and cultural activities. Be sure to arrive early and take the opportunity to explore this rural enclave, one of the most beautiful in inland Asturias.

Saint Anthony of Padua (June 13, Cangas de Onís)

On 13 June, Cangas de Onís hosts the Festival of Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the town’s most popular celebrations. The atmosphere is lively, with music, popular activities, and strong community involvement. It’s worth combining the visit with a trip to the nearby Picos de Europa.

Corpus Christi Floral Carpets (variable date, Castropol)

In Castropol, the Corpus Christi celebrations transform the streets into true works of ephemeral art.

The floral carpets, made from petals and natural materials, feature designs that blend tradition and creativity. For the best experience, visit early in the day when the carpets have just been completed.

A preview of Asturias’ cultural summer

Although summer has not yet begun, spring offers a glimpse of some of the major cultural events to come. One of these is the Semana Negra de Gijón (3–12 July, 2026), which each year turns the city into a meeting point for literature, music, and debate.

Also worth mentioning is the Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón, which, despite being held in autumn, forms part of the city’s ongoing cultural programme.

Music-wise, summer 2026 is already shaping up to be an exciting one, with concerts planned by artists such as Aitana and La Oreja de Van Gogh. More details will be confirmed as the season progresses.

Experiencing Asturias like a local

Beyond the specific dates, what makes this calendar special is the way in which culture is woven into everyday life. Markets, small fairs and spontaneous celebrations are held in almost every village, offering visitors the chance to stop and join in.

To make the most of the experience, consider staying in rural accommodation or a small boutique hotel, which offer a closer connection to the surroundings. In cities such as Gijón and Oviedo, staying in central neighbourhoods makes it easier to access events.

At the table, the recommendation is clear: follow the seasons. Cider, cheeses, traditional stews, and homemade desserts are all part of a cuisine that accompanies—and completes—any cultural experience.

Spring, the best time to discover Asturias

Travelling to Asturias in spring means getting ahead of the summer without missing out on anything. It means enjoying festivals without crowds, lively villages, and landscapes at their best.

A combination of culture, nature, and tradition that transforms every trip into something more than just a getaway: a way to understand the region first-hand and following the rhythm of its festivals and celebrations.
