The Region of Murcia has much more to offer than just history, lush farmland, baroque architecture and vibrant festivals. It also has its own coastline. With over 250 km of coastline stretching between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor, the Costa Cálida is home to some of the most stunning beaches in south-eastern Spain. Unspoilt coves, long stretches of sand, turquoise waters, seabed to explore… There is a beach for every traveller. We have put together a selection of our favourites for you to enjoy this summer in Murcia.
1. Calblanque: nature in its purest state
Tucked away in the Calblanque Regional Park, this beach is Murcia’s wild jewel. Golden dunes and hills covered in Mediterranean scrub, with a sea that changes from blue to green depending on the time of day. There are no buildings in sight, no beach bars and no noise. Just you and nature.
📍 Directions: From Cartagena, take the RM-12 motorway and follow the signs to the park. Access is controlled in summer and shuttle buses are provided.
💡 Local tips: Take water and some food, as there are no services. Avoid the crowds by visiting early in the morning or at sunset, when the landscape is bathed in magical hues of light.
2. La Carolina Beach (Águilas): a postcard-perfect paradise
Aguilas boasts some of the region’s most beautiful beaches, including La Carolina. With its crystal-clear waters and fine sand, it is surrounded by a protected natural environment, making it the perfect place to unwind. What’s more, the seabed there is perfect for snorkelling.
📍 Directions: Signs along the road from Vera to Águilas will guide you to the beach. There is a small car park nearby.
💡 Local tips: It gets very busy in the high season. For more privacy, you can try the neighbouring coves such as Cala Cerrada or Cala de los Cocedores, just a few minutes’ walk away.
3. Calnegre Beach (Lorca): a little-known gem that will steal your heart
This semi-urban haven, with its authentic flavour, lies nestled between the towns of Lorca and Mazarrón. Secluded and peaceful, Calnegre is surrounded by red hills which give it an air of being the “secret Murcia”, prompting visitors to fall in love with it.
📍 Directions: From Lorca or Mazarrón on the RM-D21. There are signposts and a space for parking.
💡 Local tips: After spending the day at sea, climb up to the Puntas de Calnegre viewpoint to enjoy one of the region’s most beautiful sunsets.
4. Bolnuevo Beach (Mazarrón): enjoy quick dips in the sea amid eroded cliffs
Famous for its landscape of “Las Gredas”, rock formations that look sculpted by the wind, Bolnuevo is a comfortable and wide beach. It is ideal for families and offers all the necessary services to ensure a hassle-free day.
📍 Directions: Very accessible from Mazarrón, following the RM-332.
💡 Local tips: At the weekend, it tends to get busy. It’s a good idea to visit during the week, or to explore the nearby, quieter Playa del Rincón with its beautiful views.
5. La Llana (San Pedro del Pinatar): salt flats, flamingos and the infinite sea
Located alongside the Regional Park of Las Salinas, this long beach boasts transparent waters and white sand. Here, you can swim while watching free-roaming flamingos or walk for miles without seeing anyone else.
📍 Directions: Access from the port of San Pedro. There are walking and cycling routes through the dunes and salt flats.
💡 Local tips: Make sure you visit the nearby mud ponds, which are famous for their healing properties. A natural outdoor spa.
6. Playa Honda (Cartagena): total calm in the Mar Menor
This is an ideal beach for those with small children or for anyone looking to swim in warm, calm, shallow waters. Situated on the Mar Menor coastline, Playa Honda is the perfect place to enjoy long, relaxed days.
📍 Directions: Easy access from the RM-12.
💡 Local tips: The promenade beckons you for a sunset stroll. Combine your visit with a fresh fish dinner in Cabo de Palos.
7. Playa del Portús (Cartagena): where time stands still
This cove is surrounded by mountains and is somewhat isolated. It boasts clean waters and a calm atmosphere. What’s more, it is one of the few naturist beaches in the region and is highly valued by those seeking privacy and a connection with nature.
📍 Directions: From Cartagena, take the road to Canteras and then to El Portús. The final stretch is quite winding, but it’s worth it!
💡 Local tips: Wear footwear suitable for walking on rocks to discover even more secluded coves.
8. Playa de El Mojón (San Pedro del Pinatar): a classic with all the services
One of northern Murcia’s most family-friendly and accessible beaches. There are beach bars, shaded areas, showers and sports facilities. Its promenade also makes it ideal for elderly people and those with reduced mobility.
📍 Directions: Located in the urban centre of El Mojón and very well connected.
💡 Local tips: If you enjoy walking along the shore, you can connect this beach with others, such as Torre Derribada, and even reach La Lana.
9. Cala Reona (Cabo de Palos): diving, silence and beauty
This is a small cove, hidden between cliffs and popular with divers. This is an ideal starting point for exploring the Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve, one of Europe’s best diving destinations.
📍 Directions: From Cabo de Palos, take the road to Calblanque Park.
💡 Local tips: Bring your snorkelling gear and get up close to the fish right by the shore. Arrive early to find a place in high season.
