Whilst visiting the Region of Murcia and enjoying its exceptional climate is a great choice whenever you decide to go, there’s a special reason for discovering this region in 2024. We’re talking about the celebration of the Jubilee Year of 2024 in Caravaca de la Cruz, a unique occasion that gives you the perfect excuse to plan your visit to the Region of Murcia.
Here are a few other reasons why it’s worth visiting the Region of Murcia in 2024:
Believe in the Extraordinary
Caravaca de la Cruz, located in the northwest part of the Region of Murcia, is getting ready for a truly memorable year: its Jubilee Year in 2024. Throughout this period, the city expects to welcome up to a million pilgrims, all with the common goal of arriving at the Shrine of the Santísima y Vera Cruz to obtain Plenary Indulgence.
Caravaca invites you to believe in the extraordinary, being one of the five Holy Cities in the Christian world and celebrating a ‘Perpetual Jubilee’ since 9 January 1998, when this was granted by Pope John Paul II. The first of these was in 2003 and since then it has been celebrated every seven years.

Walk the Camino de Levante, a unique experience
To reach Caravaca de la Cruz via the Caminos de la Cruz (Ways of the Cross), the Camino de Levante is the most popular option. This route connects places along paths noted for their culture, tradition, history, food, nature and faith. It starts in Orihuela and is divided into five stages, covering a total distance of 120 km and leading to the final destination of the Shrine of the Santísima y Vera Cruz.
The Shrine of the Santísima y Vera Cruz: an essential place
Gaining the jubilee involves visiting the Shrine of the Santísima y Vera Cruz in Caravaca. But don’t stop there. Once there, take part in a religious celebration at this sanctuary, which has been a National Historical and Artistic Monument since 1944. The interior houses the Museum of the True Cross.

Time to enjoy nature
While in Caravaca, you can’t afford to miss a visit to the Fuentes del Marqués. This natural area, listed as an ‘Historical Site’, is one of the key local attractions. Here you’ll find an ancient Torreón Templario (fortified tower of the Templars), shrouded in legend, and now home to the Nature Interpretation Centre.
Savour the local cuisine
The food in Caravaca de la Cruz is based on the local farm produce and livestock. Dishes such as migas and rice in their various guises (with rabbit, chicken or snails) are particularly popular in the area. As for dessert, the iconic yemas, made with egg yolks and sugar, coated with a delicious layer of caramel or chocolate, are the perfect delicacy to take home with you.
