Overlooking one of Corsica’s most beautiful bays, Calvi brings together within just a few kilometres everything that makes the island special: crystal-clear sea, mountains, history and unspoilt nature. Located in the heart of Balagne, in north-western Corsica, it is compact enough to explore at a relaxed pace, while also making an excellent base for discovering one of the island’s most fascinating regions.
Dominating the landscape is the Citadel of Calvi, perched on a rocky promontory above the harbour. Stepping through its walls means wandering along narrow streets, past old houses and unexpected Mediterranean viewpoints, before heading down towards the marina and town centre, lively with terraces, restaurants and cafés.
The sea is, of course, one of the main attractions. The long Calvi beach, right opposite the town, makes it easy to combine sightseeing with a swim, while those looking for wilder landscapes can head to the Revellata peninsula, just a few kilometres from the centre, with its Mediterranean scrub, cliffs and small coves.
For one of the best views over Calvi, head to Notre-Dame de la Serra: from the sanctuary, the panorama stretches across the gulf, the Citadel and the Revellata peninsula. It is also a great starting point for discovering Balagne’s more natural side, a region crossed by numerous walking trails.
It is also worth dedicating at least a day to the hinterland. Hilltop villages such as Sant’Antonino, Pigna and Corbara reveal another side of Corsica, with stone houses, artisan workshops, olive groves and sweeping sea views. Pigna, in particular, has become one of the centres of Corsica’s revival of traditional craftsmanship and culture.
Then there are the flavours of Balagne: olive oil, cheeses, cured meats, honey, products made from Mediterranean herbs and wines from the Corse-Calvi appellation. A cuisine deeply rooted in the land and the perfect way to end a day spent between beaches, walks and small villages.
Calvi manages to be many things at once: a seaside resort, a historic town and a gateway to a more rural and authentic Corsica. An ideal destination for anyone who does not want to choose between a beach holiday and a journey of discovery around the island.
