Here’s a two-day itinerary to discover Montpellier at your own pace, with no need to hire a car.

Some cities require long journeys to reach their main attractions, while others seem made for exploring on foot. Montpellier belongs to the second group. Its historic centre is compact, many streets are pedestrianised, and when you feel like venturing further afield, an efficient tram network makes getting around easy.

Located in the south of France, just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean, Montpellier has everything you could want from a city break: an old quarter steeped in history, a vibrant cultural scene, great food and inviting places to pause and soak up the atmosphere. Best of all, a weekend is long enough to discover its main attractions at a leisurely pace and without a car. If you’re planning a two-day escape, follow this 48-hour itinerary in Montpellier, from Friday afternoon to Sunday.

Friday afternoon: your first hours in the heart of Montpellier

Our first stop is Place de la Comédie, Montpellier’s main meeting point and the perfect place to start exploring the city. With the elegant Opéra Comédie and the Three Graces Fountain as its landmarks, this vast pedestrian square hosts a little everyday spectacle: street musicians, café terraces, residents crossing from one side to the other and visitors arriving for the first time. From here, head into the Écusson, the name given to the historic centre because its street plan resembles a shield. It’s a maze of narrow streets, pale stone buildings and little squares that seem to appear out of nowhere. The best way to explore is without too much of a plan, following streets such as Rue de l’Ancien Courrier, with its boutiques and independent shops, or lively Rue de la Loge.

Among the corners worth discovering is Place Saint-Roch, a small square overlooked by the church of the same name, with several terraces where you can stop for a break. A little further on, Place Jean-Jaurès is particularly lively as evening approaches.

To end the day, find a terrace in the historic centre and enjoy an unhurried dinner. Montpellier has a tempting choice of bistros and restaurants serving Languedoc specialities, accompanied by regional wines such as those from Pic Saint-Loup. You don’t need much more for your first evening: a stroll through the illuminated streets of the Écusson is enough to understand why Montpellier makes you want to stay.

Saturday morning: markets, monuments and panoramic views

Start your Saturday at Les Arceaux market, one of Montpellier’s most enjoyable markets. Held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings beneath the impressive arches of the Saint-Clément aqueduct, it brings together local producers selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheeses, artisan bread, honey and other regional products. It’s a great place to have breakfast, buy something to snack on later or simply browse the stalls. It also reveals an everyday side of Montpellier, far removed from the usual sightseeing routes.

From the market, walk to the Promenade du Peyrou, a large elevated eighteenth-century esplanade featuring an equestrian statue of Louis XIV and an elegant monumental water tower, the Château d’Eau. Its gardens offer lovely views over Montpellier and the surrounding area. Just a few metres away stands another city landmark: the Arc de Triomphe, built in the late seventeenth century in honour of Louis XIV. Passing through it brings you back into the historic centre through one of its grandest entrances.

Continue along Rue Foch to Place de la Canourgue, one of the loveliest and quietest squares in the Écusson. Its trees, historic buildings and terraces make it an ideal place for a coffee before continuing your tour.

The secrets hidden behind closed doors

One of Montpellier’s distinctive features is its hôtels particuliers, grand private townhouses built mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Many go unnoticed from the street, but behind their imposing doors lie inner courtyards, magnificent staircases and elegant architectural details.

Some can be visited on guided tours organised by the Montpellier Tourist Office, a highly recommended option for anyone keen to explore the city’s history beyond its squares and monuments. It’s also a way to discover Montpellier’s more discreet side, which often remains hidden from visitors who stick to the main streets.

Saturday afternoon: from the cathedral to France’s oldest botanical garden

After lunch, continue towards Saint-Pierre Cathedral, one of Montpellier’s most distinctive buildings. Originally built as a monastery chapel in the fourteenth century, it stands out for its imposing façade, supported by two enormous cylindrical pillars that give it an almost fortress-like appearance. Right next door is the historic Faculty of Medicine, associated with one of Europe’s oldest university traditions in medicine.

Just a few steps away is one of the city’s most peaceful spots: the Jardin des Plantes. Founded in 1593, it is France’s oldest botanical garden and offers a welcome contrast to the bustle of the historic centre. Its paths, centuries-old trees, medicinal plants and shady corners invite you to wander without watching the clock.

A visit is especially rewarding in spring and autumn, although the garden retains its charm for much of the year. Check the opening hours, as they vary with the seasons.

To round off Saturday, return to the historic centre and spend some time browsing its small shops, independent bookshops and galleries. Montpellier has a strong university and creative identity, reflected in its shops and cultural life. To explore this side of the city further, read our article about Montpellier’s youthful spirit, university energy and local life.

Sunday morning: art and a walk through contemporary Montpellier

Set aside Sunday morning to enjoy another of Montpellier’s great assets: its cultural offerings. One option is to visit the Musée Fabre, one of southern France’s leading museums of fine arts. Located beside the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, it houses an important collection of European painting from the Renaissance to modern art, with a particular emphasis on French artists.

If photography is more your thing, head to the Pavillon Populaire, an exhibition space devoted to the medium that hosts temporary exhibitions. Both venues are just a short walk from Place de la Comédie, so it’s easy to adapt your morning to your interests. Then head east to see how Montpellier has combined its medieval past with a much more contemporary urban vision.

The Antigone district, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, is striking for its wide avenues, monumental squares and neoclassical-inspired buildings. From there you can continue towards the banks of the River Lez and, if time allows, explore Port Marianne, another outstanding example of Montpellier’s urban transformation. To find out more about this part of the city, see our article on Antigone and Port Marianne, Montpellier’s most modern neighbourhoods.

Sunday afternoon: one last meal before heading home

To finish off the weekend, choose one final culinary stop. If you’d like to stay near the centre, return to the Écusson for lunch at one of its small restaurants or treat yourself to brunch. You’ll find several suggestions in our guide to the best brunch spots in Montpellier.

If you have a few more hours to spare, another option is to visit Marché du Lez, a creative hub with plenty of food options by the river, where former industrial buildings now house restaurants, shops and cultural activities. It’s an excellent choice for experiencing a different Montpellier before your journey home. You can get there by public transport, without a car.

And if your return journey means leaving earlier, don’t worry: you’ll still have seen much of the city without travelling far, with enough time to enjoy its squares, markets and historic corners.

Practical tips for visiting Montpellier in 48 hours without a car

Where to stay: For a weekend break, the easiest option is accommodation in the Écusson or near Place de la Comédie. The area around Montpellier Saint-Roch station, within walking distance of the centre, is also convenient.

Getting around: The historic centre is easy to explore on foot. To reach neighbourhoods such as Port Marianne or places slightly further away, use the tram network. Bear in mind that free public transport in Montpellier is reserved for metropolitan-area residents with the appropriate pass; visitors must buy a ticket.

When to visit: Montpellier is a great destination for a city break all year round. Spring and autumn offer particularly pleasant walking temperatures, while winter lets you enjoy the city in a quieter atmosphere. Summer can be hot, so plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon.

If you have an extra day: Spend it exploring the Mediterranean beaches near Montpellier. From lively places such as Palavas-les-Flots to wilder landscapes such as L’Espiguette, there’s something for everyone.
