This two- or three-day itinerary explores Triana’s workshops, the patios of the northern districts, neighbourhood markets and historic towns across the surrounding countryside.

Day 1: Triana, ceramics and the opposite bank

Start early at Triana Market, when the stalls selling fruit, fish and cured meat still set the pace of the morning. It’s the perfect spot for breakfast before exploring Callao, Antillano Campos and Alfarería, three streets connected to a craft that has shaped much of Seville’s identity: ceramics.

An essential stop is the Centro Cerámica Triana, housed in a former factory and arranged around original kilns and historic pieces, with explanations of the neighbourhood’s pottery-making techniques. It opens from Tuesday to Sunday and is only a few steps from the market, so the two visits can be combined at an easy pace.

Next, step into the surrounding workshops and shops. Instead of just choosing a tile, find out where it was made, which decorative technique was used, and whether the workshop accepts commissions. Some studios offer sessions where you can paint your own piece. Book these near the start of your trip, as the firing process may mean you have to collect your work one or two days later.

Triana is also home to historic corrales and traditional communal houses, including the Corral de los Corchos (calle Alfarería, 138), the Patio de las Flores (calle Castilla, 16) and the Corral de San Jorge (calle San Jorge, 19). As many of them are private residences, they can only be viewed from the street or during the occasional open day. The rule is simple: do not pass through a closed gate or treat an inhabited courtyard as a photo set.

Return to the market for lunch or find a table on San Jacinto, Castilla or Pureza. In the afternoon, cross to the island of La Cartuja, preferably by bus, bicycle or taxi during the hotter months. There, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo occupies the former Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas. The exhibitions are complemented by cloisters, gardens, ceramic kilns and industrial chimneys, making the building just as interesting as its programme. Allow at least two hours.

Finish the day beside the Guadalquivir. The walk back will bring you to Triana just as its small shops reopen and the terraces come back to life.

Day 2: Feria, San Luis and the Alameda

The second day can be completed entirely on foot. Begin at Feria Street Market, next to the church of Omnium Sanctorum. If it is a Thursday, you will also find El Jueves, a morning flea market selling antiques and second-hand objects along the street. On other days, the food market and its small bars are still worth a visit.

Just a few metres away stands the Palacio de los Marqueses de la Algaba. Its arcaded courtyard and centre devoted to Mudéjar art offer a brief and usually peaceful visit, particularly in the morning. The palace opens from Monday to Saturday, although special hours apply in summer and during some public holidays.

Continue through Plaza del Pumarejo and along Calle San Luis, pausing to admire the churches of San Marcos and Santa Marina before reaching San Luis de los Franceses. Hidden behind its relatively restrained façade lies one of the city’s most elaborate Baroque interiors. The complex opens from Tuesday to Sunday; in July and August, visits are usually concentrated between the morning and early afternoon.

From here, take a detour to the Espacio Santa Clara cultural centre, housed in a former convent with courtyards, gardens and the Torre de Don Fadrique. Then approach the Alameda de Hércules via the side streets. Relator, Peris Mencheta and Calatrava are lined with bookshops, creative studios, small independent stores and bars popular with local residents.

Slow the pace down during the middle of the day. Take a long lunch break, visit an exhibition or relax at your accommodation and save the Alameda for after seven, when the squares fill up again. There is no need to work your way through a long list of venues: just choose a shaded terrace, order a drink and keep walking towards the next square.

Day 3: three possible excursions

For a half-day trip, the easiest option is Itálica, in Santiponce. Metropolitan buses leave for the town from the Plaza de Armas station. The amphitheatre, paved streets and mosaics of the ancient Roman houses are best visited first thing in the morning. The site closes at 3 pm from late June to September and remains closed on Mondays for most of the year.

Itálica

Complete the excursion at the nearby Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, where Gothic and Mudéjar styles blend together, before returning to Seville for an afternoon beside the river.

Carmona deserves a full day’s visit. Enter the old town through the Puerta de Sevilla, continue to Plaza de San Fernando and follow the whitewashed streets towards Santa and the viewpoints overlooking the countryside. The Roman necropolis, located outside the walled enclosure, is best visited early in the morning or during the cooler months.

Osuna requires a little more time, but its urban itinerary is very compact. Calle San Pedro is lined with stone palaces, and the former university and collegiate church are located in the upper part of the town. Although trains run from Seville, it is worth checking the timetable before planning your day.

How to plan the getaway

For a two-day break, spend the first day in Triana and La Cartuja, and the second day in Feria, San Luis and the Alameda. If you have three days, you could add a shorter excursion to Itálica, or you could choose to discover the landscape and architecture of the surrounding countryside in Carmona or Osuna.

Carmona

Between May and September, plan outdoor walks between 9 am and 1.30 pm, and then go out again after 7 pm. Museums, covered markets and long lunches are better options than crossing the city at midday. Remember to carry water, use sun protection and wear shoes suitable for cobbled streets. Also, check for Monday closures and book craft workshops in advance.

This route is not a replacement for monumental Seville: it broadens the experience with living patios, functioning workshops, neighbourhood squares, and towns where history unfolds at a different pace.

There is more to Seville than its most visited monuments.
