Ajaccio has a very Mediterranean way of whetting the appetite. It smells of salt, warm bread, ripe fruit, sheep\u2019s cheese and thinly sliced charcuterie. The city invites you to sit down without ceremony: on a bench facing the sea, on a sun-warmed rock, in the shade of a palm tree or on an urban beach after a quick swim.<\/h5>\n

Here, eating well does not require white tablecloths or a reservation made weeks in advance. Sometimes all you need is a shopping basket, a chilled bottle and a view of the gulf.<\/p>\n

In Ajaccio<\/a>, a picnic<\/strong> is not a second-best improvised plan. It is a very natural way to understand the city<\/strong>: buy Corsican products in the morning, walk a few minutes and put together a simple meal in a place where the landscape does almost all the work. No rush, no formality, and no need to spend midday inside a restaurant when the best dining room is shining outdoors.<\/p>\n

Start at the market<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Your route should begin at the March\u00e9 Central, on Place Campinchi<\/strong>, just a few steps from the port and the historic centre. In the morning, the square brings together much of what you will want to taste in Corsica: artisan charcuterie, cheeses, seasonal fruit, maquis honey<\/strong>, biscuits, breads, sweets and ready-to-go products.<\/p>\n

\"quesos<\/figure>\n

The Halle Gourmande<\/strong>, the market\u2019s covered area, makes things even easier. There you can look for cheeses, charcuterie, wines, breads and something sweet to finish the meal. It\u2019s best to arrive early, before the heat builds and before the most interesting stalls run out of produce. If there are local producers \u2014 especially on Wednesdays and Saturdays \u2014 it is worth asking what is best that week. In Corsica, seasonality is not for show: it changes the flavour of your picnic.<\/p>\n

What to put in your basket<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A good Ajaccian picnic does not need to be complicated. The base can be crusty bread, a wedge of Corsican cheese, a little charcuterie, fruit and biscuits to finish. Coppa<\/em><\/strong> is a safe bet: cured, aromatic and easy to share. Lonzu, saucisson<\/em><\/strong> or panzetta<\/em><\/strong> can also be included.<\/p>\n

Brocciu<\/em><\/strong> deserves a special mention. This fresh cheese<\/strong>, traditionally made from sheep\u2019s or goat\u2019s whey, is one of Corsica\u2019s great specialities. When it is in season, it can be enjoyed with bread, herbs, tomato or a drizzle of oil. In summer, when fresh brocciu is not always available, brousse or other local fresh cheeses are good alternatives. For something sweet, canistrelli<\/em><\/strong> are perfect: dry biscuits, travel-friendly, easy to store and available in versions with aniseed, lemon, almond or white wine.<\/p>\n

The bottle depends on your plans. A white or ros\u00e9 wine from the Ajaccio appellation works very well if the picnic is at sunset and no one has to drive. For midday, chilled water, local lemonade or a non-alcoholic drink is a better choice. In any case, it is worth bringing reusable cups, cloth napkins and a bag to take all rubbish away with you. On an island, every wrapper matters more.<\/p>\n

Useful shops and stops in the centre<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Besides the market, central Ajaccio lets you complete your shopping without going far. Around Rue Fesch, Place Foch and the streets leading down to the port<\/strong>, there are bakeries, small \u00e9piceries and shops selling Corsican products where you can buy a piece of cheese, a box of canistrelli<\/em><\/strong> or fig jam to go with the bread. The area is practical because you can sort out the whole basket on foot and then continue towards the sea.<\/p>\n

For those who want something sweet before finishing the shopping, La Biscuiterie Imp\u00e9riale<\/strong><\/a>, near Saint-Fran\u00e7ois beach, is a useful stop for biscuits or afternoon-snack specialities to take away.<\/p>\n

Sit by the sea: Saint-Fran\u00e7ois<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The most immediate option is Saint-Fran\u00e7ois beach<\/strong><\/a>. It is close to the centre, at the foot of the citadel and near Boulevard Lantivy, so it works very well if you want to shop in the morning, have a swim and eat without changing pace. It is a simple, urban and very Ajaccian beach: the city behind you, the sea in front of you, and an easy picnic set-up.<\/p>\n

It is best to look for a spot that does not block access, avoid the harshest midday hours in July and August, and not set out your picnic as if the beach were a private dining room. For a short picnic, it is perfect: bread, cheese, fruit, a swim and then back to wandering through the centre. If it is windy, sit on the promenade instead, where there is more support and less sand on your plate.<\/p>\n

Trottel and the start of the Route des Sanguinaires<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Trottel beach<\/strong>, larger and more open, is a good alternative for those who want a little more space. It lies in the direction of the Route des Sanguinaires<\/strong> and has a more active atmosphere, with families, swimmers, walkers and people going in and out of the water after work. For a late-afternoon picnic, it works especially well: the sun drops, the light softens and the gulf begins to change colour.<\/p>\n

\"panorama<\/figure>\n

From Trottel, you can continue walking towards the beaches along the Sanguinaires road. Marinella<\/strong> is a convenient stop if you want a more beach-focused version, with sand, swimming and an open horizon. In high season it can be busy, so the trick is to go early or wait until late afternoon. A picnic at seven, with less heat and more peace and quiet, is usually better than one at two.<\/p>\n

Casone: shade, views and an urban break<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Not every picnic in Ajaccio has to look directly out to sea. Place d\u2019Austerlitz<\/strong>, known as Casone, offers a different kind of break: more urban, more historical and with space to sit without sand or salt. The monument to Napoleon dominates the esplanade and, from the area, you can glimpse the gulf between trees and quiet streets. It is a good spot for those who prefer to eat in the shade, especially with children or when they want to avoid the wind on the coast.<\/p>\n

It also serves as a transition point towards the Sentier des Cr\u00eates<\/strong>, one of the most accessible walks from the city. There is no need to hike the whole route to enjoy it. Just go a short way, find an open view and take something simple from your backpack: bread, cheese, fruit and water.<\/p>\n

Sunset at La Parata<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For a more scenic picnic, the area of La Parata and the Sanguinaires Islands<\/strong> is hard to beat. It is farther from the centre, so it requires a little more planning, but it rewards you with one of Ajaccio\u2019s most beautiful endings to the day. Here the picnic should be light and very responsible. There is no need to carry half a cooler or leave bags open to the wind. A little coppa, bread, cheese, canistrelli and water are enough.<\/p>\n
