Mah\u00f3n, the capital of the Island of Menorca<\/a> is, for most, the point of entry to the island and definitely a must for a visit during your stay on Menorca.<\/h5>\n

Along with Ciutadella<\/a>, it\u2019s one of the island\u2019s main cities<\/strong>, with a captivating history which is still evident today, as you walk through its streets and take in its beautiful buildings. A place in which to wander casually and aimlessly<\/strong>, where you\u2019ll marvel at every corner.<\/p>\n

Thanks to its large natural harbour, one of the largest in the world, <\/strong>Mah\u00f3n<\/strong><\/a> was, in ancient times, a strategic point for controlling the Mediterranean<\/strong> and therefore somewhere that many civilisations were keen to conquer: the Arabs, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Turks and the British were just some of the city\u2019s past rulers.<\/p>\n

You can still see signs of their presence on the island today, although the most noticeable trace has been left by the British, who ruled here for almost a century<\/strong>, and thanks to whom Mah\u00f3n became the capital of Menorca, which was previously Ciutadella.<\/p>\n

Mah\u00f3n Menorca: the highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re thinking about what to see in Menorca<\/a> on your next holiday, keep at least one day free to visit the city of Mah\u00f3n and its wonderful harbour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Come with me to discover Mah\u00f3n<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

The only way to do this is to start by strolling through the streets in the centre of the city<\/strong>. My advice would be to wander aimlessly, seeing where its streets and alleyways take you. <\/p>\n

Stroll until you come to calle de Isabel II<\/strong>, where you\u2019ll see the noble townhouses, and then on to the Town Hall<\/strong>, with its Baroque architecture. The clock on its fa\u00e7ade<\/strong> was installed at the request of the Governor Richard Kane and was the first mechanical clock on the island<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Beside the Town Hall stands the Church of Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong>, where you\u2019ll find a beautiful organ with over 3,000 pipes.<\/p>\n

Very close to these two sights is one of the city\u2019s best-kept secrets, the Mirador del Pont del Castell, <\/strong>one of the finest viewpoints from which to admire the amazing Port of Mah\u00f3n from above<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Continue walking until you reach the Pont de Sant Roc, all that remains of the medieval city walls.<\/strong><\/p>\n

By the time you get there, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll be feeling hungry, so make your way to the Fish Market<\/strong> (Mercat del Peix<\/em>), where you can enjoy a few tapas in one of its restaurants or bars<\/strong>, made with Menorca\u2019s finest fish and seafood.<\/p>\n

Just a few metres from the Fish Market, you\u2019ll find the Claustro del Carmen<\/strong>, with its countless stalls selling typical Menorcan products<\/strong>. The ideal place for a spot of souvenir shopping.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now almost time to visit what is probably the city\u2019s strongpoint: the Port of Mah\u00f3n<\/strong>. Take a peaceful stroll around this wonderful place, and why not stop for a drink or dinner in one of its restaurants?<\/strong> You\u2019ll have an amazing evening!<\/p>\n

If you have more than one day spare to see the city of Mah\u00f3n<\/strong>, I\u2019d strongly recommend you visit the La Mola Fortress<\/strong>, standing at the harbour entrance. This is the most important military structure in Menorca and it\u2019s been perfectly preserved.<\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re an art lover, you can take a trip to the Isla del Rey<\/strong> and visit the Hauser & Wirth gallery of contemporary art<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What to see in the vicinity of Mah\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mah\u00f3n lies on the east side of the island of Menorca <\/strong>and just a few minutes\u2019 drive will take you to some amazing places that you should visit on the island:<\/p>\n

Es Castell and Cales Fonts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Just a few kilometres from Mah\u00f3n is the town of Es Castell, with its charming fishing harbour, Cales Fonts. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Here you\u2019ll find various bars and restaurants serving typical cuisine<\/strong> and, in the summer months, an arts & crafts night market<\/strong> that\u2019s really worth visiting.<\/p>\n

Mah\u00f3n Menorca: unmissable beaches<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The <\/strong>beaches in Menorca<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>are probably the main attraction for anyone deciding to spend their holiday on the island, and it\u2019s no wonder! Here you can enjoy some amazing beaches that have nothing to envy of the best beaches in the Caribbean!<\/p>\n

Close to the city of Mah\u00f3n are the most popular beaches, mainly frequented by the islanders<\/strong> and perfect if you fancy mixing with the locals.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous is Es Grau beach<\/strong>, close to the town of the same name within the protected area of S\u2019Albufera d\u2019Es Grau, the nucleus of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another great option for a day on the beach close to Mah\u00f3n is the Sa Mesquida beach.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, if you have young children with you, Punta Prima<\/strong>, with all facilities to hand, may be the ideal beach for you close to Mah\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Binibeca<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The famous and beautiful fishing village of Binibeca<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>is just 20 minutes\u2019 drive from Mah\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Strolling silently through its labyrinth of streets <\/strong>is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do in Menorca.<\/p>\n

Mah\u00f3n or Ciutadella: which is the best holiday option?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re looking at where to stay for your holiday in Menorca and you\u2019d prefer to have all the necessary amenities nearby, then I\u2019d recommend you opt for one of the island\u2019s main cities. But which one? Mah\u00f3n or Ciutadella?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The answer to this question is not at all easy and will very much depend on your tastes and requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mah\u00f3n is, for most, the entry point to the island due to its proximity to the port and the airport<\/strong>. It also has an extensive network of buses<\/strong> that will enable you to get to most key destinations on the island if you prefer not to hire your own vehicle.<\/p>\n

Here you\u2019ll find a wide range of hotels and apartments<\/strong> to meet your needs.<\/p>\n

Ciutadella<\/strong>, on the other hand, has a special charm and, for the young, a greater variety of nightlife.<\/strong><\/p>\n
