A classic local option you can enjoy is <em>churros con chocolate<\/em>, or a <em>pitufo mixto<\/em> (basically a ham and cheese sandwich) in Casa Aranda, a traditional caf\u00e9 that\u2019s been open since 1932.<\/p>\n<p>Right by Casa Aranda is <strong>Mercado de Atarazanas<\/strong>, a large local shopping plaza open Monday to Saturday, which thousands of locals and tourists alike visit. The city\u2019s biggest events such as the Holy Week parade, the Feria de Agosto (August Fair), and the renowned Christmas lights display, take place here.<\/p>\n<p>One place you can\u2019t miss on this 48-hour trip to M\u00e1laga is the Catedral de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Encarnaci\u00f3n. The former was constructed in 1 AD on Phoenician remains, and it\u2019s the oldest site in the city. I recommend taking a pitstop at the historical <a href=\"https:\/\/elpimpi.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bodega El Pimpi<\/a>, an old house from the 18th century which opened as a bar in 1971, and whose rooms have been visited by numerous figures and personalities from the art world.<\/p>\n<p>El Pimpi has a wide and varied menu, but if you fancy trying some local cuisine, allow me to suggest the <em>ensalada malague\u00f1a<\/em> (a typical dish consisting of potatoes, orange, and roasted cod), aubergine fried with cane honey, the Campero Pimpo (a toasted sandwich), or a portion of <em>pesca\u00edto frito<\/em> (fried fish), using fish prepared in a local marinade or anchovies.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/detalle_bodega_pimpi_5.jpg\" alt=\"el pimpi barriles\" class=\"wp-image-16659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/detalle_bodega_pimpi_5.jpg 900w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/detalle_bodega_pimpi_5-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/detalle_bodega_pimpi_5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/detalle_bodega_pimpi_5-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption>source: elpimpi.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now you\u2019ve refuelled, you can carry on your 48-hour trip around the unmissable sites of M\u00e1laga by dedicating the afternoon to one of the area\u2019s most distinguished celebrities: <strong>Pablo Picasso<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Take Calle Granada after leaving El Pimpi, and in 50 metres you\u2019ll find the Palacio de Buenavista, which has hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museopicassomalaga.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Picasso M\u00e1laga Museum<\/a> since it opened in 2003. Entry to the museum is 9 euros, and inside, the more than 230 works on show will take you on a journey through the different creative stages of this amazing local painter.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve gotten to know this artist\u2019s extraordinary body of work, you may be more curious about his personal life. To learn more about that, just head over to the nearby Plaza de la Merced, where you can snap a selfie with the man himself (well, an identical statue, at least) and visit the house where he was born.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/estatua-pablo-picasso-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"estatua pablo picasso malaga\" class=\"wp-image-16634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/estatua-pablo-picasso-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/estatua-pablo-picasso-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/estatua-pablo-picasso-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/estatua-pablo-picasso.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>To polish off your first day of this 48-hour trip round the unmissable sites of M\u00e1laga, I recommend pulling up a seat in any of Plaza de la Merced\u2019s many terraces, or sitting down in Restaurante Vino M\u00edo (next to Teatro Cervantes), where you can eat well for reasonable prices and enjoy a live flamenco show.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Day two: Contemporary M\u00e1laga, open to the sea<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The second day of this weekend trip to M\u00e1laga starts in the Centro de Arte Contempor\u00e1neo, commonly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/cacmalaga.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CAC M\u00e1laga<\/a>. This free museum, located in the city\u2019s old Mercado de Mayoristas, has since become a reference centre for contemporary European art. In its halls you\u2019ll find an extensive permanent collection, and other temporary exhibitions covering the different art trends of the 20th century.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After that, I\u2019d suggest meandering around <strong>M\u00e1laga\u2019s Soho district<\/strong>, where you can have some brunch, try some craft beer, see a musical in the Antonio Banderas theatre, or take some snaps of the area\u2019s surprising street art, signed by Obey, D*Face, ROA, and other internationally-renowned artists. M\u00e1laga\u2019s Soho district is basically an open-air museum!\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/street-art-malaga-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"street art malaga\" class=\"wp-image-16638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/street-art-malaga-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/street-art-malaga-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/street-art-malaga.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>As you stroll down to the port, you should take a bit of a detour and stop at the <a href=\"https:\/\/antiguacasadeguardia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Antigua Casa de Guardia<\/a>, M\u00e1laga\u2019s oldest bar, founded in 1840. Distinguished guests as Queen Isabel II, Gregorio Mara\u00f1\u00f3n, and writer Antonio Gala, have visited this bar to try local wines from the province (such as Moscatel, Pajarete and Pedro Xim\u00e9nez) with some prawns or mussels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And when you\u2019ve made your way down to M\u00e1laga\u2019s port, I\u2019d suggest visiting some more museums \u2013 there are two very different, but equally interesting, options to be found in <em>el Palmeral de las Sorpresas<\/em>. On one side you\u2019ll find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.auladelmar.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alborania-Aula del Mar Museum<\/a>, which is perfect for visiting with kids as it\u2019s full of aquariums, boat models, and collections of various sea life illustrated through different games. On the other side, there\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/centrepompidou-malaga.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Centre Pompidou M\u00e1laga<\/a>, displaying select works from Frida Kahlo, Picasso, Francis Bacon and Mir\u00f3, amongst other artists, across the centre\u2019s 6,000 square metres.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/centre-pompidou-malaga-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"centre Pompidou malaga\" class=\"wp-image-16642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/centre-pompidou-malaga-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/centre-pompidou-malaga-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/volare.volotea.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/centre-pompidou-malaga.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Centre Pompidou Malaga<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, it\u2019s time to eat. I\u2019d personally recommend opting for one of the many bars and restaurants in Muelle Uno. There are options to suit everyone\u2019s tastes and budgets, so there should be no issue finding somewhere to sit down and enjoy lunch overlooking the port. <\/p>\n<p>To help you digest your food, there\u2019s nothing better than having a lie down on the sand or going for a stroll around <strong>Playa de la Malagueta<\/strong>. If you come in summer, be sure to go for a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean. They\u2019re a classic delicacy of M\u00e1laga\u2019s cuisine, adored by locals and tourists alike.
