How to enjoy Mykonos away from the crowds

I wonder is there anyone unaware of the island of Mykonos? The island of the winds, the island with the most passionate nightlife in the world?

And yet, this island has a lot more to give to its visitors, apart from crazy nightlife and fruity cocktails. Sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, secret corners that only the locals know about, juicy salads and fresh fish. Mykonos is so much more than what most people believe.

You can get to know it, only after you forget all famous touristic spots and try to wake up early in the morning in order to explore the island while the rest of the people is still asleep.

Photogenic alleys to take pictures

Mykonos’ Chora is full of gorgeous small alleys with colorful stairs, multicolored laundries and pink bougainvilleas. Start you stroll from the old port to small Venice, early in the morning with a cup of coffee in one hand, and your camera on the other. Walk through it when everybody still sleeps around 8 to 9 am.

Little Venice

Little Venice is perhaps one of the most photographed spots on the island, a small “neighborhood” of fishing houses, with balconies from the 18th century, built precariously on the edge of the sea. Here the best time of the day to enjoy the beauty of Little Venice is during sunrise. The question is just one. Do you dare to be there around 6am?

Stupendous beaches

Forget the infamous beaches of Mykonos and head towards the ones that only locals visit and enjoy; Kapari Beach, Panormos, Fokos, Agios Sostis, Agios Ioannis, Lia and Ornos are among the most beautiful. Explore them!

Astonishing sunsets

Maybe Santorini is famous for its magical sunset, but the well-informed travellers know that Mykonos has an even more beautiful sunset, but you just have to find it yourself in the right place at the right moment.

The upper part of Chora and the distinctive windmill, standing alone, is the ideal spot to take your time and enjoy the sunset. If again you need to mingle more with the crowd, avoid going to the windmills (Mili), where everyone ends up, and head to 180 Sunset Bar. Another lovely choice for a unique sunset is the Armenistis Lighthouse. Dating back to 1891, this is one of the most interesting lighthouses in the Cyclades. Note it down!

So, how can you enjoy Mykonos and its’ hidden gems away from the crowds?

The only secret, or maybe two, is waking up in the morning -yes early, really early, around 8pm- and having the means of transport to take you away from the island’s Chora, where it’s usually super crowded.
