Elphomega, our Local Hero from Southern Spain

Are you thinking of travelling to Southern Spain?

While you’re fantasizing about your trip, we’ve created this playlist so you can start enjoying your trip before you touch down.

The artist Elphomega, born in Malaga, reveals the best places for a perfect holiday: a drink with live music, where to eat the best sushi in the city and which is the best place for a relaxing morning stroll.

Hello, Sergio, how would you introduce yourself to Volotea passengers who don’t know you?

Hello. My stage name is Elphomega and I’m a hip-hop artist, writer and illustrator.

Do you think Malaga has influenced your music in any way?

Of course, I think your environment plays a huge part in the way you express yourself artistically. On the other hand, growing up in Malaga, a tourist city that absorbs all the current trends, I found it very easy to get into the music style I play when I was very young.

What advice would you give to someone who’s just booked a flight to Andalucia but doesn’t know where to start?

Have breakfast. Toast made with good local bread drizzled with an exquisite extra virgin olive oil.

Which museums or galleries are totally unmissable?

Malaga currently has the best range of museums and art galleries in the region, from the classics to contemporary ones: from CAC, to Museo Ruso, Museo Picasso, Thyssen, Pompidou, and more.

Which are your favourite three places for eating and drinking in Malaga?

In the centre of Malaga, the Asako restaurant has an amazing menu of oriental fusion flavours and the best sushi in the city. To discover all kinds of authentic Andalusian produce and tapas in relaxed, traditional surroundings, you can’t beat the El Cortijo de Pepe, also in the centre, in the middle of the Plaza de la Merced. And lastly, you can’t leave without trying a skewer of sardines, I recommend the El Palo or Pedregalejo beach bars in the east of the city.

Where would you go to listen to live music or dance?

The La Térmica cultural centre and La Catarina, a craft brewery near Marbella (with a lineup by thiiirdculture), are, in my opinion, the best places for live music at the moment, ahead of their time and not part of the mainstream music venue circuit.

Is there a record shop or second hand street market you’d recommend?

El Rastro de Fuengirola is a great choice on a Saturday morning where you can find all kinds of furniture, antiques, bric-a-brac, tools, comics, vinyl records and much more.

Which event in Malaga wouldn’t you miss for the world this year?

Any Elphomega gig, obviously.

If you wanted to take a morning or evening stroll, where would you head to?

Gibralfaro, where you can take in spectacular views of the whole city.

Which beaches are at the top of your favourites list?

The Maro beaches are my favourites. They’re a series of almost unspoilt coves near Nerja and Frigiliana, the latter being a beautiful village in a cove that’s truly unmissable.

Which other Volotea destination would you like to visit and why?

I wouldn’t mind visiting Bordeaux and tasting some of its wines in a vineyard. I’d love to experience that.
